Unit 2: The Modern Period (1800-1900): Protestant Beginnings, Expansion, and Institution-Building in a Declining Dynasty

In this unit, we will focus on the beginnings, expansion, and institutional-building of Protestant Christianity in China. Christian mission expanded rapidly in the second half of the 19th century. One of the significant results of the rapid Christian expansion and the institutional-building of the missionary organizations was a growing Chinese Church with 700,000-800,000 Chinese Catholics by 1900 and almost 100,000 Protestants.
