Welcome to the second unit in our course on the message of Jesus. In this unit we will focus on the beginning of the ministry of Jesus. The Synoptic Gospels (the term synoptic comes from a Greek word Synoptic that means “to see the whole together” and refers to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke) all report that Jesus started his ministry with being baptized by John the Baptist and that the Holy Spirit led him into the wilderness to be tempted by the Devil.
Understanding these important events in the life and ministry of Jesus will help us to make sense of his message. We will also further explore two very important titles that are used to describe Jesus in the Gospels: the Son of Man and the Son of God. We will use the Gospels as our primary source for information in this study.
There are six sections in this second unit of the course:
1. Unit introduction
2. Jesus, the Son of God
3. Jesus, the Son of Man
4. The baptism and temptation of Jesus in Matthew’s Gospel
5. The baptism and temptation of Jesus in Mark’s Gospel
6. The baptism and temptation of Jesus in John’s Gospel
Once again, do make sure to have your Bible and a notebook ready as you progress through each of the sections and units of this course. Take note not only of what you are learning, but also of the questions that you might have for further study.
