Why did Jesus live?

Unit 2: The Crucifixion of Jesus in the Gospels

Welcome to the second unit in our course on the mission of Jesus. In this unit we will continue to explore the nature and purpose of the ultimate act of sacrificial love of Jesus – his passion. The passion of Jesus remains the pinnacle of his earthly ministry.

The Apostle Paul, in writing to the churches in Galatia, saw in the cross of Jesus the open door of God’s salvation and blessings. Paul writes:
“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20 ESV)

We will continue our journey in carefully examining the passion of Jesus. We will also study the crucifixion, death and burial of Jesus in the Gospels of the New Testament. We will conclude our study in this unit by examining the saving mission of Christ through his passion.

There are seven sections in this second unit of the course:

  1. Unit introduction
  2. The passion prophecy fulfilled: “He was the lamb”
  3. The passion prophecy fulfilled: “He would not see corruption”
